@ Another brand new design bike light for from MagicShine, the MagicShine MJ-900 bike light using a Cree XM-L2 LED. This little light really is tiny, but does pack a punch for it’s size. We’ve kept everything as small as possible including the battery especially for the road boys where weight is paramount. The MJ-900 comes with a 2.6Ah 7.4V battery as standard weighing in at 130 grams it will make your commute a synch with very little extra weight to carry! We can’t wait for the reviews, to see what the cycling world thinks of this new addition to the MagicShine stable!

  • IN USE?The MJ-900 makes use of four power levels 100%, 50% 30% and a flashing mode. These power options are chosen by pressing the button on top of the lighthead and each option is scrolled through including the off position before cycling back to 100%.
  • BATTERY?The MJ-900 comes with a tiny 2.6Ah battery as standard, perfect for keeping weight and costs down, however we do offer the option of increasng your run time by purchasing the bigger 4.4Ah or 6.6Ah batteries before the checkout. The battery indicator for this light shows red once the battery is below 30% charge. Please note, it does not use the same system as our other lights by turning through the colour changes to indicate 75%, 50% and 25% useage.
  • RUN TIME?The standard 2.6Ah 4.4V battery will give a maximum run time of 2.3hours on full power, with just over 4 hours on 50% power going right up to 10 hours on 30% of power output. If you do require more rum time you can opt to purchase a bigger battery at the checkout. The options include the 4.4Ah and 6.6Ah batteries from Magicshine.
  • BEAM?The Magicshine MJ-900 has a beam angle of 20 degrees, so slightly wider than the MJ-858, with a thoroughly decent beam throw that much higher priced lights would be envious of. A great little light for the road.
  • MOUNTING?A newly shaped ‘o’ ring makes mounting this light head to your bars even simpler than before. The battery reverts back to the velcro strap of old, but for such a small battery this works perfectly.

Good light – best of three, March 31, 2016

I bought three front lights at the same time in order to test them out and find the best fit:

    CycleBean 900 (900 lumens) – $45.40
    CatEye 800 (800 lumens) – $119.22
    MagicShine MJ-900 (1200 lumens) – $65.99

The high beam on this light is good for seeing far ahead of you, and makes you pretty visible at night. The middle and low settings aren’t very useful (unsurprisingly). The flashing setting is useful for being seen and is okay for seeing by, unlike the CatEye’s flashing mode.

One thing I did notice is that, after running this light on high for maybe 20 minutes, the back got *very* hot. That’s a little concerning, as it could be a bit of a burn risk, plus I would worry about it overheating and turning off. I still recommend this light over either of the others due to its price point, but, if the heat is a concern, I would point you to the CatEye.

I really like the mechanical design of this light, November 17, 2016

Overall, I really like the mechanical design of this light. The beam pattern could be improved to put more light where it is needed and less in the eyes of oncoming traffic. The electrical side has a couple issues.

The first full charge (according to the green light on the charger) only ran the light on high for 35 minutes. That was between two 20 minutes rides a day apart. Luckily I had a backup light for the last 5 minutes.

For the second full charge I set up a test stand that would measure light output and duration. The test stand included a fan to keep the light unit cool. This time the light lasted 62 minutes. A lot better than 35, but a long way for two and a half hours.

After charging the battery is at 7.85 V. So somewhere in the vicinity of 80-90% full. So the charger is not perfect, but the battery is less than half the rated capacity.

I really want to like magicshine’s lights and would like to be able to recommend them to friends. Hopefully magicshine is willing to correct this issue.

Update: After several battery cycles I now get 1:45 run times. I’m pretty happy with that. My only issue now is that the low battery light is very dim.

… mountain bike ride with the Magic Shine MJ900 was great! It rained hard, March 1, 2016

My first mountain bike ride with the Magic Shine MJ900 was great! It rained hard, mud was everywhere and the trails were slick, but the MJ900 did a great job lighting the way. This is my 3rd Magic Shine. The other 2 were excellent- the first one is still working after almost 8 years of riding 3x per week during the Pacific Northwest winter months- It’s now a back up. The second one I’ve given to my daughter who is now night riding with me. I would definitely recommend Magic Shine. I’m tempted to pony up and get the new MJ906… more on that later!
