Shimano SH-MT34 Shoes Blue, 48.0 - Men's
@ Flats have their place on DH trails and clipless pedals are great when you’re all about the climbs, but what about when you’re hammering up hills, ripping down, getting after rolling terrain, and hopping out of the saddle to negotiate some really rough stuff? That’s when a do-it-all combo shoe like the Shimano SH-MT34 Men’s Mountain Bike Shoe really cleans up. The mesh and synthetic leather upper and burly rubber tread make the MT34 look like a hiking shoe, but the recessed two-hole mountain bike cleat gives you some extra pedal power when the going gets tough. The shoe is built on a fiberglass-reinforced rubber sole, which gives you powerful stiffness without making walking impossible, and includes an EVA midsole that serves up loads of support for all-day comfort. Shimano finished the MT34 off with lace keepers to make sure your strings stay out of the drivetrain, because a snagged lace will have you in a heap before you can say “I shoulda gone with hook-and-loop.”

  • Upper Material: mesh, synthetic leather
  • Closure: lace
  • Sole: fiberglass-reinforced polyamide, EVA
  • Cleat Compatibility: 2-hole mountain
  • Claimed Weight: [single, size 40] 1 lb 6.6 oz

Comfortable commuters, but use them with cleats, June 16, 2015

After putting over 100 miles on them in the first week I can say these are very comfortable SPD shoes and a good replacement for my four-year-old Keens, which had begun to hurt my feet. The soles of these shoes are quite stiff, though probably not as stiff as you’ll find in racing shoes or even more serious MTB shoes. They are stiff enough to give you solid power transfer to the pedals, but they flex enough when you’re walking that you can walk fairly normally in them. This was key for me because most of my miles are commute miles and include a decent amount of walking at one end of the trip. So far, so good. They are relatively light (though anything would be lighter than those Keens!) and they seem airy and breathable so my feet haven’t been too hot in them, even in very hot weather. I don’t imagine they will be great for colder weather, but I shall see.

The main drawback I have noticed is that the soles are a fairly hard rubber so if you try to pedal without being clipped in the sole is too hard to give you any grip on the pedals. I have commuter pedals that are SPD on one side and a flat platform on the other so I often pedal just stand on either side of the pedal to get moving w/o worrying about clipping in at first. This can be tricky with these shoes. They are made to clip in. If you consider them for riding w/o cleats, make sure you have toe clips or you might regret it.

UPDATE: About a year and hundreds of miles later these shoes are still great but now I see that the little plastic eyelets for the laces are too sharp and end up cutting into the laces, which are now frayed and about to break in several places. Plan to pick up replacement laces on a regular basis.

Received today and ridden today. Shimano PD-M540 SPD Pedals with Shimano SH-MT34B Bike Shoes Blue Mens. Go together quite well. Pedals are well constructed and easy to install and adjust. Set to the lowest (-) tension they clip in easily, hold my foot well, and clip out easily. I guess more tension is needed for more aggressive riding. Shoes are very good as well. Wear a USA 11.5 D and bought the size 46. Fits perfectly. Gave the shoes 4 stars because the plastic shoes look too plasticky. The vibrant blue is potently artificially vibrantly blue. Just call it sporty and I like it. Clipped in cycling is excellent in overall function.
