Great shoes for commuting and local rides, May 10, 2015

This could be 5 star or something less, depending on what you’re looking for.

I went to my LBS looking for a good novice clipless shoe. I ride mostly to commute with some 20+ miles on the weekends. These were perfect. They’re very light and breath well, just like my old minimalist shoes that I’ve been using for rides. Plus they are flexible enough to walk around in after I get off my bike. No awkward click/clack. I just spent the entire day at work in these.

That said, the soles are rigid, but not super rigid like your nylon/carbon bike shoes. They’re not even as rigid as some other touring shoes I’ve tried on. So if rigidness is your thing, you might be disappointed. But for me, these guys are just the trick. I get up in the morning, put these guys on, cinch up the draw string laces and I’m out the door.

Comfortable shoes for casual bike riding, April 11, 2015
    By

    Verified Purchase(What’s this?)
I ordered these with my Shimano Click’r pedals, and the bicycle shop I bought my bike from set me all up: not only did they assemble my road bike, but they also helped me install my pedals and cleats for my shoes. Yay! These shoes are super comfortable to pedal in. I had to get the men’s size 42 because I normally wear 9 wide in women’s sizes. If need be, I am able to walk around in these shoes because the cleats don’t stick out too much.

Not for racers, but a good choice for touring, commuting, or those making the first step beyond toe clips., June 12, 2016

I use these with a set of Shimano PD-T400 CLICK’R Clipless Pedals (Black). The Click’R system in general is excellent, and made transitioning from toe clips to cleats a completely drama-free experience. Within 2 rides, uncleating at a stop became pretty much second nature. On a couple of occasions, I’ve had a panic stop where I didn’t use the proper twist-then-lift motion to unlock, but the cleat released anyway. I suspect with more aggressive pedals (i.e. SPD’s) I probably would have crashed. Yet I’ve never had the shoe come uncleated during normal pedaling. Now I’m far from a powerful cyclist, but I’m no Sunday cruiser, either. I’d say I’m somewhere between a casual and serious rider.

As for the shoes themselves, they’re easy to put on and comfortable. With the optional metal cleat installed, you can feel the faintest of drag when walking on unfinished concrete, but the experience otherwise is little different that walking in tennis shoes. They’re stiffer than tennis shoes, but far more flexible than standard cycling shoes. My only complaint is that they seem to run a little large. I normally wear a US size 8 1/2 men’s, so I ordered the size 42 which is supposed to translate to an 8.3. Unfortunately, they’re a little too loose. I feel like I’m losing much of the benefit of having clipless pedals when I have to take up a bunch of slack in the shoe on the upstroke before I feel like I’m pulling the pedal. I’ll be ordering a replacement pair in a size 41. Since I’ve worn the current pair too much to return, I’m gonna have to try to sell them on craigslist or eBay. Hopefully I can recover a reasonable amount of my purchase price.

The Select Road series is hands down the bang for your buck!, March 31, 2016

This is my second pair of the Select Road series I own the 3’s and love them. The 4’s are equally as amazing and the color scheme is a little more appealing. More vents make for a cooler ride and right out of the box they are comfortable. Can’t beat the price and will buy Pearl Izumi shoes and gloves as long as I ride my bike.

Lovin’ these shoes!, August 3, 2016

    Big Dan (Naples, Italy) –

We all know that sizes vary from one brand to the next for shoes of all kinds. Add the extra uncertainty of converting US to Euro sizes — finding a comfortable bike shoe for a US 13D like me is always an adventure. Size 47 has worked for me for most brands, although some are too narrow. Last year I bought a pair of top-line Sidis (~$300) at a local shop. They felt comfortably snug in the shop, but after about 40 miles they hurt. They are sturdy, rigid shoes, and it took about six months (and a few rainy rides) to soften them up a little. They’re better now, but in the hot summer months I still suffer on 50+ mile rides. I bought an inexpensive pair of size 47 Shimanos online (not Amazon), but they were too short so I sent them back. I found these on the Amazon Prime Day sale (30% off!). After the Shimano experience, I ordered size 48. Another reviewer said they were narrow, but these babies fit my medium/wide feet perfectly. They’re a bit soft so I guess performance is compromised somewhat. The toe box is rounder which allows some nice tootsie-wiggle space a few hours into a hard ride. I wasn’t crazy about Velcro straps, but I’m over that as these aren’t hard to adjust, even on the fly. The Pearls are now my go-to shoe; I’ll rotate the Sidis in for fast rides under 50 miles. We expect cycling shoes to hurt somewhat, but these have been great, and the black/red matches my bike!
