I live at the foot of the Catskills and near the Shwanagunk range as well, so I’m in hiking heaven. After threatening to explore this area for years I started hiking a couple years ago when I had the chance. This year I’m committed to getting out on a much more regular basis and for much longer hikes. And that means I can’t keep making due with a cheap backpack and crappy shoes. It’s time to get the right gear, and this Hydration Pack is the perfect item for my pack and hydration needs.

One thing I have learned is that if I’m hiking with a couple bottles of water, I end up dehydrated because I can’t be bothered to keep stopping to take my pack off, get the bottle out, take a few swigs, then put it back. And I don’t do well in heat so it’s even harder for me to hike in warmer weather. A few weeks ago I got a bladder and went on a 10 mile hike at Mohonk Mountain that has a ton of scrambles…AND it was a 90-something degree day. I almost backed out because of that combination, but decided I’d go and if necessary, excuse myself if it was too much. Well, having filled the bladder with ice I put it in a standard backpack and off I went with 24 other hikers. For the first time I wasn’t totally done in with the heat and I attribute it to having the hydration bladder….. BUT … it was a bit of a pain using it with a standard pack that didn’t have the straps to secure the pack on and my shoulders were wrecked at the end of the hike….. Sooo… time to take the next step and get a proper backpack that is designed to keep the bladder from slipping around and that is ergonomically designed to not screw your shoulders up.

I actually got a few of these things to check out. And let me tell you, you get what you pay for!

This pack is by far the best one I’ve checked out so far. The stitching, materials, and construction are superior to the cheaper packs. The nylon fabric is heavy duty and built to sustain a lot of abuse. The zippers are solid and the hardware is well designed for ease of use and durability. The meshed, padded back is designed to keep your back cool and comfortable on long adventures.

Compartment-wise there are 2 smaller external pockets for your cell phones and chargers, maps, firestarters, and other small items. The lower pocket has a mesh zipped compartment that you can put smaller things or your phone in so they don’t fall out when you open the pack up as well as a mesh pocket and a snap to attach your keys so you can find them easily when you are too tired to cope with digging through your pack to find them.

The upper pocket actually flips up to allow access to the 3rd pocket that is designed for the bladder. Just a friendly tip here: Make sure when looking at other Hydration packs that you actually get a bladder with it. There are many who don’t include a bladder and there are a lot of standard packs that *look* like a hydration pack. So make sure you know what you are getting before you order.

This bladder is designed to fit the pack permanently (or is it the other way around ?) 🙂 It has a super wide mouth opening so you can add ice and water easily. This hydration bag doesn’t come with a fold-over top for easy cleaning… I prefer that style so I am not crazy about that one part of the design. I *MUCH* prefer the fold over design because anything that doesn’t dry properly here in the Summer is likely to get moldy. The one redeeming feature of this design issue is the fact that the mouth is super large which helps when it comes to cleaning and drying the bag out. The hose and mouthpiece are freeze proof. The drinking-end has a shut off valve AND a bite valve to ensure that it doesn’t leak when you are not drinking from it. The hose snaps right onto the bag with no problems and is easy to release for cleaning.

The backpack itself is designed so you can refill the bladder easily without removing it…. an other big plus. But with a 3L bag, I hope I don’t have to refill it any time soon…. LOL. There’s even an additional design feature that makes it possible to use other bladders effectively that have the smaller mouths which I thought was a clever idea as we often have several hydration bags on the go.

If I could I’d give this 4 1/2 stars … for one reason. That is that it’s soooo well made that it’s actually heavier by far than any other options I have. Meaning that you are starting out with a fair bit of weight before you add anything water or provisions. The good thing is it’s so well balanced and designed that you don’t notice the extra weight when it’s on. Which is why I didn’t dock a full star for this.

I am so pumped to have a decent backpack now for my hikes…. and now I have less excuse (the heat) to not hike…. which will benefit me in the long run. Happy hiking!!!!

I received this for free in exchange for my time to work with this product so I can write a fair and honest…

Why did I like this product?
From the feel of the box it came in.
The bag it was packed in.
The way it looked laying in the box.
These are things that caught my eye.

The stitching is excellent. Not one dangling thread anywhere.
The strength of the bag. I tugged, yanked and pulled everything that has a stitch in it . Everything held firm and solid.

The Zippers that worked perfectly never hung up or locked up.
The bladder itself. Wonderful quality. From the feel you will see what I mean.
The hose that is not going to stiffen and break in cold weather. I put it in a freezer for three days. Came out soft and supple.

The ability to take it apart to clean it for you safety and health. Very well designed.

The cap with its antiloss ring.
The quick connects of the hose and mouth pieces. Great idea.

The padded areas for your back and shoulders is a great benefit.
The clips the rings the Velcro swatch the loops the pouches the storage.

So you see what I mean. You will just a few seconds after you open this wonderful box.

If you have any questions please feel free to ask.
I have every confidence that you are going to love this just as much as I now do.

I did receive this at a discounted rate in exchange for my honest and unbiased opinion and review.
