Very Functional Design But Poor Construction and Durability, March 26, 2015
    By
Not my real name guy (Midwest) –

    Verified Purchase(What’s this?)

So a couple of weeks ago my wife came up with this excellent idea that before our upcoming Orlando trip, we should get lightweight, packable travel backpacks, so we could carry water bottles, rain ponchos and other small items into the theme parks, packs that would fold up really small into a suitcase and in use be smaller, lighter and more convenient to put in lockers at some of the more vigorous rides where carry-on items are not permitted. Well, there are quite a few varieties of these packs available here on Amazon and many of them appear to be the same pack made in the same Chinese factory with different brand names (and up to a $10 difference in price, so be warned that if it looks the same, it almost certainly is the same regardless of a price and brand name difference). The choice for my wife and daughter was pretty easy as they liked the smallest HikPro 20-liter packs that came in bright colors, have nearly 5/5 average reviews, and a 5-year warranty.

However, I wanted something larger, so to avoid wasting too much time researching and reading endless reviews, I ended up ordering several different models (this 30-liter Sunhiker/Tanluhu in electric lime green, the almost identical 30-liter New Outlander in light blue, and the larger 25-liter HikPro in red) with the intent of seeing in person which would be best and then returning the others. Unfortunately, the one I selected to bring with me on vacation turned out to be this “Sunhiker” pack (which doesn’t actually say “Sunhiker” anywhere on the pack – its brand label, as shown in the photos here, is “Tanluhu” ) and I discovered that this pack is poorly made and not at all durable.

INTENDED PURPOSE/USE – LIGHTWEIGHT TRAVEL PACKS vs. HEAVIER DUTY DAY PACKS:

I’ve seen a number of reviews for this sort of lightweight travel backpack that have left me shaking my head, as the reviewers were altogether clueless about what they were buying and as a consequence, wrote very unfair reviews when the products did not work for a purpose for which they were not designed. Several reviews have complained that these packs are not durable enough to hold lots of heavy textbooks; one guy complained that after loading it up with as many heavy text books that he could fit into it and taking it out on a test run, it was neither comfortable nor did it seem durable!?! Well, guess what? This is a very lightweight backpack that is designed to pack up very small to fit in a corner of a suitcase until you need to open it up either for lightweight carrying of items and hiking on vacation, or to have as an emergency/spare carry-on bag when flying. It is designed to carry items of modest weight (probably no more than 7-10 lbs) without sharp corners or edges. If you are looking for a pack to carry a full day’s worth of text books on campus several hundred days a year (or a large bag of scissors, 1000 rounds of ammo for your .45, an anvil, etc…) and run around with the pack on your back like some sort of madly flailing dork (with people cheering “Run Forest! Run!”), this is not the sort of pack you should have bought. What you need is a sturdy day pack kind of backpack of the sort made by LL Bean, REI, North Face, High Sierra, Kelty, Jansport, DaKine, etc… – heck, I’ve even seen what appeared to be some very high quality, heavy-duty and attractive Cordura packs in the past week at Disney World by Samsonite and Adidas.

I’ll also address another question: Do you really need this pack? Well, obviously that depends on your travel plans. Travel packs are lightweight items for occasional, not daily use. If you travel with a suitcase and carry-on bag and might want something to bring on day trips that will pack tight into your suitcase, then yes, a travel pack will be just what you want. If what you intend to bring with you in a backpack weighs only a pound or so, a travel pack will actually work better than a heavier duty day pack, which won’t sit properly on your shoulders and back with too light of a load. I found that I didn’t actually need a travel pack on our Orlando trip and could have made do very easily with my heavier duty Cordura REI day pack that I had used as a carry-on on the plane, as one can bring bags on every ride at the Disney parks and at the dozen or so rides at the Universal parks where one cannot bring anything on the ride, they have free lockers, so it didn’t matter if my family used multiple lockers for our bags. However, at one of the Cedar Fair parks like Cedar Point, Carowinds, Knotts Berry Farm, Kings Island, Kings Dominion, etc… where they charge for lockers by the hour (excessively in my opinion), several smaller travel packs might be the better option for a family, as they can fit into a single locker and avoid the extra charges for renting multiple lockers. Any sort of carrying of items toward the maximum end of the weight range that would work for a travel…

Bang for your buck!, March 21, 2015
    By

    Verified Purchase(What’s this?)
This bag is a huge bang for your buck. It is very light weight and folds up pretty small for a 35L pack. The webbing is NOT thin and cheep. The mesh on the side pockets is thick and they hold a 32oz Nalgene very well, and the material is fairly water resistant. The whistle on the chest strap Is very loud, but if you are a big chested person then the strap might not work so well. The only problems I’ve had with it is at the top of the shoulder strap and the zippers. I had to reinforce the seam on the inside of the bag where the shoulder straps are sewn in for fear of them tearing off. I am a little rough on backpacks so it might just be me. While you’re at it you might want to consider adding in a strap or Velcro to secure a Camelback to. I’m not sure on how durable the bag will be because I’ve only been using mine for about a week. I posted some pictures of the bag so you can get a better idea of its size. I will also post some more pictures in a while to see how it holds up. I’m a slightly above average size 16 yo.

This is a fantastic lightweight backpack that is perfect for traveling. It easily folds out from a little pouch into a full sized backpack. It has multiple compartments for easy organizing of your daily essentials. It holds two water bottles on the side without problems and the inside has a pocket that is large enough that I can carry some water shoes on my next trip.

    PROS:
    1: Extremely lightweight
2: Easily folds into a small storage pouch
    3: Lots of storage compartments
4: Side pockets for water bottles
    5: Available in multiple colors
6: Water resistant (not water proof)

    CONS:
1: This is not a bag for heavy books. Make sure you buy this bag for what it is made for. This is not really a con, but just a head’s up.

I am going on a cruise in a few weeks and am looking forward to bringing this with me. It won’t take up a lot of space in my suitcase nor will it add a lot of weight. It will be perfect for sight seeing on the islands as with it’s many pockets it should have no problem holding my sunscreen, camera, water bottle, towel and water shoes.

I took this backpack on a day hike last weekend and made the following observations:
    1: Very comfortable straps
2: Held my essentials in a way that did not hurt my back
3: Items were easy to reach and find
4: Even when hiking through thick brushes the backpack held up well with no ripping

Overall I am really loving this backpack. It is perfect for what I need it for.

DISCLOSURE : Product received to test with the option to review. No financial compensation is EVER accepted, and vendor may request that item be returned. I reserve 4 and 5 star ratings for products I would either recommend to others or buy myself. This is a great product that I would highly recommend.
