Nice Alternative To The More Expensive Thule Helium Aero Hitch Rack, May 22, 2014

Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What’s this?)
At the writing of this review (note: please check all prices as they frequently change!) this Allen Sports Premier Hitch rack is $120 cheaper than Thule Helium Aero Hitch Carrier and it shows. But that is not necessarily a bad thing. The Thule rack is really quite refined, but the question I always have with hitch-mounted racks is whether a buyer really wants something that nice. What with rain and grit and dirt and the like a hitch-mounted rack is bound to take a beating. The Thule rack is so nice that it almost begs not to be used.

Enter the Allen rack. It is quite rugged, does just about everything the Thule does (with one exception; more on that in a bit), and begs to be used. Allen seemed to realize that a hitch-mounted rack is going to take a beating and built the rack accordingly. That means it looks a bit rough (again, compared with the Thule rack), but it’s a bike carrier for goodness sake!

Unfortunately, it doesn’t compare as well to the Yakima RidgeBack 4-Bike Hitch Rack. The Yakima rack is only $30 more expensive than the Allen rack and appears to have all the features the Thule one does. If I wanted something to go with my fancy SUV or minivan, I think I would buy the Yakima rack. But I have a pickup truck and a pickup truck deserves a rugged rack. So on with the review….

I like how the rack can be lowered/moved away from the back of the pickup/SUV, minivan so that the rear doors/tailgate can be accessed (obviously a feature not to be used when the rack is carrying bicycles). Assembly is simple; all you need are two adjustable wrenches. One bolt connects the hitch piece to the lower vertical piece (this forms the pivot feature just mentioned), two bolts connect the upper assembly (the 4-bike carrier piece) with the lower vertical piece. And one bolt secures the rack to your 2″ box receiver.

Here is where I have a quibble. Once you use the bolt to secure the rack to the box receiver, the hitch is essentially permanently mounted (of course you can use adjustable wrenches to undo it, but what a pain). Note that both the Thule and Yakima racks have lock features so that the carrier is secured, but not as “permanently” as the Allen rack. Here’s what I’ve done/recommend: buy something like the Master Lock 2866DATSC Swivel Head Receiver Lock, Chrome and ditch the bolt Allen supplies (but in spending the $15 for this lock, you’ve narrowed the gap even more to the Yakima rack…).

Anyway, the carrier carries four bicycles without issue (make sure you alternate them) and the supplied strap is adequate (though I tend to use bungie cords to keep the bikes in line and in control).

Summary: 4 solid stars. A legitimate cost-effective alternative to the Thule alternative. It beats the Yakima offering, but not by very much (especially if you buy the hitch lock). In the end, I like it, will be using it (alot), and am fairly pleased. Allen, if you can bring the price down another $30, you would have a real winner.

Like the Carrier…. Hate the Straps!, June 30, 2014

I’ve only had it for 6 days and used it everyday since I’ve gotten it. I like the convenience of the whole carrier dropping down to load the bikes and to have access to the back door. The only complaint I have about it is the straps. The straps was one of the reasons I chose this particular carrier over the deluxe. The straps on this carrier are made of rubber. Mind you I’ve only had this carrier for 6 days. So far one of the straps broke. Also I noticed this morning the rubber straps are starting to deteriorate. After I loaded our first bike there was black markings all over my hands. I thought it was the tires from the bike. Turns out it was from the straps. I did contact ALLEN regarding the straps and they said they had upgraded the material and will send me replacement straps.

    Excellent carrier, June 2, 2014

This review is from: Allen Sports Premier Hitch Mounted 4-Bike Carrier (Sports)
I bought this carrier in anticipation of a trip with a couple of friends, I needed a carrier that could hold three bikes. I bought this one in case I would need room for an extra bike at some point. The carrier is very well built, sturdy, very steady, and easy to install and use. The bikes were held solidly, they did not move much or at all (once they were properly strapped). I am very happy with this carrier. I think putting four bikes on it would be a tight fit, but it looks doable.

When the bikes are not on it, it is easy to swing the carrier away to get full access to the rear of the car (mine is a Ford Escape; even with the bikes on the carrier I can still open the glass portion of the rear gate, but not the gate itself). With even one bike on it, the swing release for the carrier is very hard to operate. I don’t know if it makes sense to swing the carrier when there are bikes on it, though, as the bikes will eventually hit the floor and the carrier will probably not swing all the way. I have been driving with the carrier on the car (no bikes) for a few weeks and it does not rattle at all (but I strapped a bungee cord around the folded arms and the main post).

During the installation, I was not sure if I had installed the no-wobble bolt right, so I sent an email to their customer service. I got a reply right away! They asked me to send a picture of the installed bolt, which I did, and they replied also very promptly to let me know that I had done it right.

So, I am very pleased with the product and the company behind it.

Struggle to get a mountain bike tire into., July 30, 2015

I purchased this because it says it will fit a mountain bike tire. It is very awkward and difficult to get a mountain bike (kids) into. You have to twist and angle the bike. Just a normal mountain bike, not a big donut tire thing. So while nice, strong, well made it does not work well for what I purchased it for.

I decided to purchase a bike rack since both of my boys got new ones for christmas. Living in a rural community I had little options. I wasnt sure what I would be in store for not seeing this in person but I was pleasantly surprised. This is light weight, easy to install and even easier on the wallett!

Did not work. Front tire to wide to fit properly. Couldn’t get the bike to clip in like it showed. The Bike is a Trek Pure, with 2.25 wide tires. Went back to my old Bike rack.
