Freewheeling & Fun Recumbent Read, February 12, 2013

Bryan Ball is “King of the (recumbent) Geeks.” His book is a laid back tour through the world of recumbent bicycles. Included are stories, reviews, essays, insight & a bit of history from his Bentrider website. The tales weave together to create a primer for the new enthusiast or entertainment for seasoned riders. The end of the chapter “Bryan’s Note” offers the author’s updates on how the recumbent world or his views have changed over the years. The recumbent world can sometimes be overly serious and the book’s “ramblings” & “half-baked theories” offer just the right mix.

A well written, thoughtful and lively look at the writer’s transformation from a hard core racer type to the gradual embrace and ultimately to the career advocacy of a completely different (and mostly pain-free) way of riding. Bryan Ball takes readers through his personal journey that ultimately led to his becoming the de facto leader of this rapidly growing cycling movement. The book also serves as a primer to anyone who is considering recumbent riding, navigating the choices and the decision process one must go through to “become one” with the perfect ‘bent. The entire book is laced with humorous stories that make it a thoroughly enjoyable read, and inspires the reader to lean back, relax, smile…and start pedaling.
