Realistic Security Assessment Required,
However, thieves do think that way, and are aware of how to do it. Youtube videos showing locks being picked or broken are for us, to show us what to expect, although innocent people may mistake them for “secrets” of lock breaking.
The Kryptonite Keeper Integrated Chain bike lock is rated Sold Secure Bronze, and Kryptonite rates it for “Moderate Security”, suitable for Quick Stop Lock-up in a non-major metropolitan area, or for a couple of hours in the suburbs, or in a rural area. Despite this lock being far superior to the average lock sold in retail stores, that just means that the most basic methods won’t work on it.
Thieves, aside from those who only ride away on unlocked bikes, can be expected to carry basic hand tools, small bolt cutters, wire cutters, a hammer, and a small hacksaw. Cable locks, most bike chains, and most locks are therefore useless against a real bike thief. But they are sold because they are cheap and because innocent people buy them, thinking they are securing their bikes.
EDIT: 2013-10-01 I have tested this lock with a variety of bolt cutters and it is impossible to cut it with bolt cutters which are easily concealed. It takes quite a bit of effort to cut the chain with 36″ bolt cutters with the handle on the ground.
For some, this chain will be more than enough. The lock mechanism is very solid and reliable as far as I can tell. The sleeve covers all but the end of the last link, and will prevent the chain from marring anything. The two keys are coded and one can register them with Kryptonite to get free replacements or to buy replacements after the first free set.
There is even anti-theft protection for $500, which has requirements most people will think to be above what they are willing to do, but it does show how much faith Kryptonite has in this lock.
I am very happy with this lock, and I think it is above what I need in my area, but my bike is safe and a little extra. I think this chain is the minimum a person should get to secure a bike frame, given that its cost is not much more than the useless locks, but it provides a far superior level of security.
For more security, higher security Kryptonite products should be researched.
