Works Well But Wish It Was Sturdier, November 26, 2011

    First Impressions:
    —————–
The “Platinum Series Heavy-Duty Rubber Cradles” appear to be vinyl actually: this shouldn’t affect anything but is worth mentioning. The cradles have a loose friction fit in plastic cups that slide freely along the adjustable arms. The adjusting knob is easy to use: engaging teeth provide defined stops but there is enough free play in the rack system that you should be able to find the right angle to accommodate your top tube.

Construction is not Thule or Yakima-level but appears sturdy enough. I would feel better about it if the arms were seam welded to the back plate on all four sides – not just top and bottom. Better yet: bend the arms assembly from a single piece of tubing.

    Installation:

The most challenging part will be locating a wall stud. You can pretty much guess how to install this without reading the instructions, however they are clearly written. Note: the instructions specify using a “drill bit with a diameter half the size of the screw diameter.” Doing so I had to apply so much torque that I could feel the screw heads start to strip. Consequently, I following the usual practice of using a drill bit with a diameter equivalent to the screw center (shaft less threads) and still had to soap the threads to get the screws in. I feel this is the best approach to take.

    Post-Installation Comments:

I could not find many solutions on the market for single-bike wall mount racks that adjust for angled top tubes. Overall for the price I was expecting something a bit more substantial but so far the rack is working well. I will however keep an eye on the welds so my bike doesn’t come crashing down atop my car. I thought the vinyl cradles might fall out of the plastic cups when removing the bike but they have stayed in place. The rack arms take on a slight downward tilt under the weight of the bike (confirmed by my level) so I feared the mounting cradle/cup assemblies might creep and fall off the ends, but the weight actually holds them in place. Also, the looseness provides a self-adjusting function, dynamically shifting the cradles to the best points once you put the bike in place. Overall I am satisfied with this rack but would consider a sturdier-feeling alternative if one was available.

    Verified Purchase(What’s this?)
This review is from: Gear Up Platinum Horizontal 1 Bike Adjustable Wall Storage Rack (Sports)
I was hoping to find a wall mount that would allow me to compensate for the somewhat steep angle of my bikes top tube. Most wall mounts would not allow for any adjustments and those that did seemed to be rather large, cumbersome, or require the installation of a floor to ceiling post. In the end, this was the only option that suited me – at least on paper.

Now that the mount has been installed for some time, I can say that I am very happy with my purchase. I was a bit concerned that the arms sagged a little when I hang my bike up, but I have not experienced any problems because of it. That said, the sagging is rather minor and should probably be expected – not because of poor design, but because of simple physics.

I was also concerned that the weight of the bike might case the mounting base to press into the drywall – but it has not. I should point out that I have a somewhat heavy urban bike – not a lightweight road bike.

This wall mount is great – and I would buy it again without any reservations.
