I’ve put together a video from running a few errands in down town Kuala Lumpur on my folding bicycle. There is no faster way to run these errands – and it is good for the environment and your own health, too!
I’m using a Brompton bicycle that folds really well and compact and it only weighs 10 kg. There is no need to carry the bicycle around, however, as it can be pushed around on small wheels once folded. In fact, it folds into a stroller – or shopping cart – once the bicycle basket is added. As you will see from the video, I’m using the foldable bicycle for grocery shopping in the super market.
Traffic can come to a grid-lock in Kuala Lumpur, but this is not problem for the Brompton bicycle, which easily squeezes between cars with its narrow handle bar (only 53 cm width) and therefore does not add to the traffic congestion. Wasting time and money on parking is of course also not a problem with a folding bike. The environmental benefits of the bicycle are substantial – particularly as bicycles do not add to noise or air pollution – the latter killing more that 1 million people annually in the cities around the world.
Lastly, bicycling is healthy exercise. International studies have found that if one bicycles daily, one will add 5 years to one’s life. And who wouldn’t want to do that?
Enjoy!

PS. Several people have commented that video of me squeezing through traffic looks very dramatic, almost like the movie Premium Rush by David Koepp starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Dania Ramirez in New York city. Well, riding a bicycle is exciting, but I think the filming with a GoPro camera on a body strap and at a low height (not able to look above the cars) makes the video look wilder than it really is. In fact, I feel it is quite safe to bicycle in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
PPS. Here’s a link to a Brompton dealer in the US that sells the Brompton with an electric motor: http://www.nycewheels.com/

This is a great little bag for the little money it costs,
Also comes with a rain cover. Easy on and off with velcro if you want to take anything of value with you if you
stop along your ride. I would recommend.

Cool Design, Nice size,
Sadly, after a couple weeks, its already tearing at the rear. I didn’t carry much weight inside of it, but I may of had the straps too taught around the stem/frame which pulled some of the material apart.
Im gonna suck it up and drop some cash on made in america, Revelate Design Gas Tank.

I love to ride my Brompton in London but I don't think I would ride in KL. Your video brings back memories as I lived in KL for 5 years, I worked in KLCC so not far to commute from Ampang. Bansar is another matter … Oh and sweating in the heat and the regular downpours of tropical rain in the afternoon can't be easy either. Nice video though.
Hi there…
No doubt the Brompton is a beautiful bike. But the price of owning one does make it an issue for me. I own a 24" Tern Node, an upgraded 20" UGO and an upgraded 16" Trinx. Add the price of these 3 bikes with all the upgrades and i still wont be able to own a Brommie hehehe…
Nevertheless, your video is way cool. I plan to commute to work by bike when the MRT is finally completed.
I found myself transfixed watching something as mundane as doing everyday errands. Somehow your ride and editing it made it a bit more exciting–no unnecessary comments, just the facts kind of thing. I enjoyed it. As a new cyclist and owner of a folding bike myself, I found it exhilarating to know the possibilities. If you are so inclined, we'd love to see you touring on holiday with your bike. thanks.
Very good, my folding bike is a Raleigh Ugo and an Xds AFB710, looks like a Brompton is in my next shopping list.
its very practical…i want one.
Hi…
Since you are working in KL, have you seen any of brompton bike sold in the KL? I wish to buy it here!!! Your video is so inspiring!!
Congratulations on producing a fantastic vide of your trip round Kuala Lumpur. I have watched it repeatedly and I never get tired of the way you navigate your way round the streets. It's a really good demonstration of how well the bike works as a shopping trolley too!
great idea.
Camera is a bit too low, very dizzy to watch
Kuala Lumpur. Pedal for 30 seconds and you're soaked in sweat! lol
Thanks for the video, that was really interesting! Why would anyone drive a car in that city?
I watched your video whilst repairing a rear wheel puncture on my 6gr Brompton, after a day cycling in central London and I'm going to thinking about your shopping basket idea and if I should use it more as a trolley. I wish our car drivers and black cabs were as relaxed as the KL cars tho'! What is night time cycling like in KL and what temperatures do you commute in?
Thank you, really cool video, felt like i was there.
I use my Brompton 2 speed everyday in good old London town and it is as you have demonstrated very useful and fast for 99% of journeys.
It has helped in keeping me fit and reduced my journey time to and from work considerably, would wholeheartedly recommend a Brompton to anyone looking at a Folding Bike that will last and hold its value.
My Black Brompton has a Brooks Saddle and Clipless Pedals, Power over Portability.
